United Nation’s Response To Priyanka Chopra’s Controversial Support For War

Priyanka Chopra who happens to be UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador as well has been under intense criticism for a tweet supporting and cheering the Indian Army for their pro war campaigns. According to UN spokesperson she retains her right to speak in personal capacity on issues concerning herself.

According to Khaleej Times, when UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors “speak in their personal capacity, they retain the right to speak about issues that interest or concern them,” Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said at his daily briefing on Thursday in answer to a question about Chopra.

“Their personal views or actions do not necessarily reflect those of UNICEF,” he added.

He also said, “When they speak on behalf of the UNICEF, we expect them to adhere to UNICEF’s evidence-based impartial positions.”

Antonio Guterres added, “The UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors are prominent individuals who have agreed to generously volunteer their time and their public profile to promote children’s rights.”

Priyanka Chopra has been hit by immense criticism and trolling since she tweeted on February 26, a statement, “Jai Hind #IndianArmedForces”

Shireen Mazari, Pakistan’s Human Rights Minister wrote to UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore and demanded Priyanka Chopra’s removal from being a Goodwill Ambassador. She accused her of “jingoism and support” for Indian Army.

Mazari said, “support for war, including a nuclear war. Unless she is removed immediately, the very idea of a Goodwill Ambassador for Peace becomes a mockery globally.”

A Pakistani influencer Ayesha Malik called out Priyanka Chopra at a Beautycon even in Los Angeles, USA. To this Priyanka’s response was quite harsh.

    So, end of the day, any goodwill ambassador gets all the media attention yet also get the chance to freely show support that could lead to such discussion are supported by UN. So is UN only looks for famed faces to get attention? Or it actually wants to help human kind genuinely? Next time if Priyanka or any high profile person says ‘ War is the only way’ I wonder what will be the UN respond to that??
